EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT (Teacher Assistant) PROGRAM - Advance Training (Level 3/C):

This 10-month program (July 23, 2012 - May 31, 2013) pre-employment training program is certified by Red River College.  This program is delivered by Urban Circle Adult Learning Centre within a culturally relevant context.  The Educational Assistant (EA) Program is certified by Red River College and is being delivered in partnership with several local school divisions who are committed to provide practicum placements and support for the candidates.  The curriculum will include training in all EA classifications.  Graduates of this program will learn to assist students with learning disabilities as well as those who display challenging behaviours.  After graduation, opportunities for employment and advanced education (Bachelor of Education) are excellent.

All students participate in a full course work load and are required to attend Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm.  Students must secure funding to provide their cost of living.  MB Entrepreneurship, Training & Trade is already cost- sharing some of the tuition and covering the costs for the pre-employment Life Skills/Cultural component of this program.  Eighteen Seats (18) are reserved for candidates on Employment & Income Assistance.  E&IA will cover all training costs, tuitions, books and supplies (pending funding).  The remaining seats (up to 10 seats) are cost-shared with MB Entrepreneurship, Training & Trade.  TUITION costs are $5,995.00 per student which covers all training costs.  You MUST have your personal cost of living provided by a funder (ie. social assistance, E.I./EMB, Band/Council, MB Metis Federation, etc.).   Individual seat purchases are available. Recruitment for 2012-13 program will begin in late February 2012!

  Program Description 

ADULT APPRENTICESHIP & EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM - STREAM #2 ( Focused on pre-employment skills, employment & post secondary education).

This 10-month (August 27, 2012 – June 18, 2013) pre-employment training program is an 8 credit Manitoba High School Diploma program offered in partnership with Manitoba Adult Learning & Literacy and the Seven Oaks School Division.  The training includes a life skills and cultural awareness component in addition to the full high school curriculum and their selected work placement.  Recruitment for 2012-13 program will begin in late February 2012!

HEALTH CARE AIDE/HEALTH UNIT CLERK TRAINING PROGRAM:

This 10-month (August 27, 2012– June 21, 2013) pre-employment training program is dually-certified by Red River College and is delivered in partnership with Health Sciences Centre.  The Health Care Aide/Health Unit Clerk program will have a dual purpose.  First, it will prepare a health care worker who, under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, assists hospital patients, personal care home residents, or home care clients with meeting physical, emotional and social needs.  Through theory classes, skills lab, and clinical experience, the program will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in any health care setting.  Secondly the program will provide students with the knowledge and skills required to function as a unit clerk in a health facility through a blend of: beginning level computer skills, anatomy and medical terminology and theory and practical courses directly related to the roles and responsibilities of unit clerk.

Graduates of this program will be eligible for employment in a variety of settings, including:

• acute care hospitals
• extended or long term care hospitals
• personal care homes
• community or home care agencies

All students participate in a full course work load and are required to attend Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm.  Students must secure funding to provide their cost of living. There are excellent employment opportunities upon completion of the program.  This course is a “stepping stone” into health care field.  Multiple individual funding seat purchases are available. Recruitment for 2012-13 program will begin in late February 2012!

FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER/FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER PROGRAM:

This 11-month (January 23, 2012 - December 14, 2012 ) Family Support Worker/FASD Certified Program is dually-certified by Red River College and is delivered in partnership with Neighbourhoods Alive!.

In response to this need, Urban Circle Training Centre and Red River College – Community Services Department are partnering in the delivery of a 11-month Family Support Worker/FASD Certificate program for Aboriginal women and men which incorporates the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Certificate Program.  Graduates successfully completing all requirements will earn Red River College dual certification in these areas of specialization. 

Based on Red River College’s ongoing consultation with current service providers, the curriculum focuses on a wide range of skill development including assessment, advocacy, communication, referral and parenting skills.  In addition, the curriculum will cover the theory of child development, current theories of family dynamics, and the promotion of health and safety for children and their families.  Understanding the needs of individuals effected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and the resources available to families is an integral part of the program..

Upon program completion graduates will have gained the skills to:

• establish and maintain a caring relationship and effective communication with parents and children
• understand normal child development and behaviour
• assist families to gain knowledge of household management and organization including nutrition planning, parenting skills, age appropriate lifeskills and budgeting
• provide advocacy and awareness of community resources
• write reports
• participate in case planning conferences
• teach and support the learning process
• participate crisis intervention services when required
• participate in the development of family treatment plans

The program includes a 150-hour practicum placement within an established Child & Family Services agency to gain hands-on experience at the end of the program.  The program will be delivered at Urban Circle Training Centre and will have an Aboriginal culturally based component.  Abundant employment opportunities have been identified in child and family agencies and other youth care and social services agencies within the core area of Winnipeg.  The program is certified by Red River College.

Early Childhood Educator 2 Year Diploma Program is certified by Red River College and is delivered in partnership with Province of Manitoba Council of Postsecondary Education. There are excellent employment opportunities upon completion of the program. Recruitment for 2013-14 program will begin in late September 2012 - PENDING FUNDING APPROVAL!

• First Nations/Aboriginal Men and Women – (Treaty Status, Non-Status, Métis Status, Métis Non-Status, Inuit)

• Must complete 20 hours of volunteer time in a childrens centre or approved alternative ie. Previous employment or volunteer in childrens centre as well as experience through a high school. 

• Must submit written letter verifying the 20 hour volunteer/work experience working with “pre-school” children in the last 2 years as part of the application (see front page of application). 

• Must have a completed Grade 12 High School academic standing (High School, G.E.D. or Mature Grade 12 Diploma) Official transcripts/diploma must be submitted with application OR qualify under the “Special Admision Requirments” outlined in the Red River College brochure.

• Must be able to demonstrate reliable source of personal financial support such as Social Assistance, Employment Insurance, Band/Council, M.M.F., Part-Time Employment, etc.  Your personal financial support must include costs for transportation, childcare (if required), etc.  (see attached list)  All Tuition Costs are Paid by Our Funder!

• Must be in agreement to Provide & Submit the original, acceptable and current (within 6 months) criminal record search check and child abuse registry check as part of the application (see front page of application)     

• Demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English

• Successful completion of a prescribed reading skills test at the required competency level administered by Red River College (to ensure you are able to read the post secondary curriculum)

• Competence in an Aboriginal language and/or knowledge of Aboriginal customs, beliefs, and practices is an asset

ADULT APPRENTICESHIP & EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM - STREAM #1 (Focused on a pre-employment skills, apprenticeship trade skills and employment).

This 11-month program (April 10, 2012 - January 18, 2013 ) is an 8 credit Manitoba High School Diploma program offered in partnership with Manitoba Adult Learning & Literacy and the Seven Oaks School Division.  The training includes a life skills and cultural awareness component in addition to the full high school curriculum and their selected apprenticeship trades work placement. In Senior Years Apprenticeship Option (SYAO) courses, students will be matched with a journeyperson, or designated trainer, in their chosen career field.  The academic portion starts on April 10, 2012 and ends August 30, 2012.  The apprenticeship/work placement component begins in September, 2012 and ends on January 18, 2013.  The paid apprenticeship/work experience is 330 hour work experience which will then allow each student to continue their education towards obtaining their Level 1 Apprenticeship in their chosen apprenticeship trade.
